LONG WEEKEND IN THE PLEGRAEAN FIELDS AND THE UNDERWATER ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK OF BAIAE – 3 DAYS, 2 NIGHTS

We have the pleasure of presenting an excursion which, due to the quality of the service, the fascination of the dives and the emotions they bring with them, will turn out to be a most memorable experience.

Programme for qualified divers:

Day 1

09:00 (approx.)

Excursion to the Castle of Baia where it is possible to visit the Archaeological Museum which houses finds from the underwater Archaeological Park of Baiae.

This dive site is typically representative of the Phlegraean fields; the presence of Roman ruins presenting its archaeological content and the natural, active fumaroles representing the volcanic origin of the area.

A specific route is laid through the remains of an ancient aristocrat’s villa of the imperial Roman era. The villa belonged to Piso and was subsequently confiscated by Emperor Nero. It is still possible to appreciate the spacious garden encircled by an arcade and passages, a series of service rooms, a fountain and a generously sized thermal bath (which has become home to a school of meagre) with mosaic and pillars.

The reef, with its peak at -8m, is of significant biological interest due to its biodiversity. The caves and, in particular, a spectacular natural archway through which the suns’ rays penetrate generating fascinating lighting effects makes this dive site one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. The typical current causes the reef to be rich in flora and fauna. *Underwater photography is strongly recommended.*

The magnificent port was intended for the arsenal of the Classis Misenensis, the most important Roman fleet, and was connected to Lake Lucrine and Lake Avernus via a navigable canal. The ancient port baceame completely submerged due to bradyseismic activity (a volcanic phenomenon). Structural remains and mosaics make this a unique dive site.
